Flow Net

 Flow Net: The graphical representation of the laplace equation is called flow net.
Flow net is a graphical representation of direction of seepage and head at every point. The space between two adjacent flow lines is called the flow path or flow channel. 

FLOW UNDER DAM

  Let us consider the example of a flow net shown in fig. Each flow line starting at the upstream boundary with head `h_{1}`, dissipates the head in viscous friction and attains head `h_{2}` when terminating at the downstream boundary. All such lines are shown by continuous lines. Along each flow line there must be a point where the total head may have a specific value. A line connecting all such points of equal head represents the equipotential line, and such lines are shown by broken lines.

 

Characteristics of Flow Net:

➡️ The flow lines and euipotential lines meet at right angles to one another.
➡️ The fields are approximately squares, so that a circle can be drawn touching all the four sides of the square.
➡️ The quantity of water flowing through each flow channel (Δq) is the same.
➡️ The potential drop (head drop Δh) between two successive equipotential lines is also same.
➡️ Smaller the dimensions of the field,greater will be the hydraulic gradient and velocity of flow through it.
➡️ In a homogeneous soil, every transition in the shape of thr curves is smooth, being either elliptical or parabolic in shape.
➡️ The flow lines or two equipoyential lines never cross each other.

Applications Of Flow Net
The applications of flow net are:
➡️ Determination of seepage
➡️ Determination of uplift pressure.
➡️ Determination of seepage pressure.
➡️ Determination of exit gradient.
