(1)Particle size
     ➝ Permiability varies approximately as the square of the grain size.(Allen Hazen's formula)
`k=C.{D^2}_{10}`
where,
          k=coefficient of permiability (cm/s)
       `D_{10}`=Effective diameter (cm)
         C=constant = between 100 and 150

(2)Properties of pore fluid:
   ➝The permiability is directly proportional  to the unit weight of water and inversely propertional to its viscosity(η).

     ∴ `\frac{k_1}{k_2}=\frac{\eta_2}{\eta_1}`

   ➝ It is usual practise to report the coefficient permiability at 27°C.
   ➝The following equation can be used for conversation of the permiability to 27°C.
`k_{27}=\frac{k\eta}{\eta_{27}}`

Where,  `k_{27}`=Coefficient of permiability at 27°C.
               `\eta_{27}`=Viscosity at 27°C.
               k=permeability at test temperature.
              η=Viscosity at test temperature.
➡️Permiability increases with increases in temperature, due to reduction of the viscosity.

(3)Void ratio
   The coefficient of permiability varies as e³/(1+e). For a given soil greater the void ratio, the higher is the values of the coefficient of permiability.
➡️ Permiability of two sand specimen having equal void ratio will be different.

(4) Shape of particles
   The permiability of soil depends upon the shape of  particles.
   ➝ Angular particles have a greater specific area as compared with rounded particles. For the same void ratio, the soils with angular particles are less permeable than those with rounded particles. Permiability is inversly proportional to the specific surface.

(5) Structure of soil mass
    ➝ Stratified soil deposits have greater permiability parallel to the plane of stratification than that perpendicular to this plane.
    ➝ For the same void ratio, the permiability is more in case of flocculated structure as compared to that in the dispersed structure.
   ➝ Permiability of soil deposits also depends upon shrinkage cracks, joints, fissures, and shear zones.
   ➝ Loess deposits have greater permiability in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction.

(6)Degree of saturation
     ➝ If the soil is not fully saturated, it contains air pockets formed due to entrapped air. The presence of air in soils, causes blockage of passage and permiability is reduced. The permiability of partially saturated soil is considerabely smaller than that of fully saturated soil.

(7) Adsorbed water
   ➝ The fine grained soils have a layer of adsorbed water strongly attached to their surface. This adsorbed water layer is not free to move under gravity. It causes an obstruction to flow of water in the pores and hence reduce the permiability of the soils.

(8)Impurities in the water
   ➝ Any foreign matter in water has a tendancy to plug the flow passage and reduce the permiability of soils.
